GENDER ISSUES IN POLITICAL PARTICIPATION AND LEADRSHIP

Globally, unequal participation by men and women in elected positions and other areas of decision making is evident in the predominance of men among parliamentarians, cabinet ministers, and heads of government. This has resulted in a deficit of the requisite critical mass of female political leaders who are in strategic positions to influence the process of producing concrete changes in power relations towards poverty reduction. Thus, gender issues have been an important and integral part of contemporary discourse especially on issues of power and political leadership. Like their counterparts the world over, Nigerian women are poorly represented in politics and decision- making positions at all levels. The editorial board of African Journal of Gender and Development therefore welcomes original research papers for publication in its next edition. Interested authors should submit manuscripts whose major focus is on issues which are central to gender, political participation and leadership in Nigeria.
