The African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF) is the first Africa-wide grant-making organisation which has been set up to provide grants to African women’s organisations. The vision of AWDF is for African women to live in a world in which there is social justice, equality and respect for women’s human rights. To this end, our mission is to mobilise financial resources to support local, national and regional initiatives led by women, which will lead to the achievement of this vision. AWDF raises money and makes grants for the support of non-profit African women’s organisations working for social justice, equity and peace.
Since October 2001 when we started grant making operations, AWDF has funded over 800 women’s organisations in 45 African countries, and has awarded over U$14m in grants. AWDF raises its funding from international funding agencies, private foundations, bi-laterals, corporations and individuals within and outside Africa.
In November 2010, AWDF will be celebrating 10 years of its operations and as part of the anniversary celebrations AWDF has set up a scholarship fund to award 3 bursaries ($5000 each) to 3 young women who show an interest in political participation. This fund, which will be dedicated to the memory of the late Madam Hawa Yakubu will cover tuition and a project of the recipient’s choice which should be centered on mentoring/working with other young women.
We are hereby inviting entries from young women between the ages of 18 and 25 studying in any of the tertiary institutions in Ghana on the following topic:
EMPOWERING GHANAIAN WOMEN FOR EFFECTIVE POLITICAL PARTICIPATION – A REALITY OR POLITICAL RHETORIC?
Deadline for submission of entries is 2 weeks from the date of this advertisement.
Entries should be typed, not more than 1000 words (4 A4 sheets), double spaced, justified and in font size 12.
Entries should be accompanied by a cover letter clearly stating the name, age, institution of study, subject of study, and aspirations of the applicant.
Selection process is as follows:
All entries will be screened by an independent consultant. The 10 best essays will be selected and passed on to a panel of Eminent Ghanaian Women who will invite the 10 applicants for an interview. The awards will be given to the 3 best candidates to be determined by the panel.
