National Association of Black Journalists - New York Times Journalism Institute Program

Follow in the footsteps of the best and brightest young journalists in America by applying to The New York Times Student Journalism Institute.

The Institute is offered twice a year. The dates for 2011 are:

Jan 2 through 16 for student members of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, at Florida International University in Miami. The deadline to apply is Oct. 30, 2010.

May 15 through 29 for student members of the National Association of Black Journalists or any student at a historically black college of university, in New Orleans, at Dillard University. The deadline to apply is Feb. 26, 2011.

There is no cost whatsoever to attend the Institute. Students are provided with room and board and all of their costs, including transportation to and from the Institute are paid by The New York Times Company.

During the program, students are working journalists supervised by reporters and editors from The New York Times, The Boston Globe and regional newspapers of The Times Company. Opportunities for students include reporting, copy editing, photography, Web production, print and Web design, and video journalism.

To apply, a student must submit a completed application form; an essay of up to 500 words on why he or she wants to be a journalist; a letter of recommendation from a professor or an editor, which must be mailed separately, and one of the following work samples:
– Six published writing clips or five published clips edited by the student, including headlines written by the student;
– Six photographs, which can be published or unpublished.
– Six print page or Web page designs, which can be published or unpublished.

Graduates of the Institute now work at major news organizations that include the Associated Press, The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, and The New York Times itself, and dozens of mid-size news organizations.
