AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH Arts and Writing Competition for High School Students
THEME: How can we build on The Dream for ourselves and the next generation?
50 years ago young people from the North went on Freedom Rides to the South to end racial segregation. Beaten and jailed, they refused to turn back. They helped the Civil Rights Movement win passage of the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts Young people today face new forms of racism and violence. They are building new movements to foster equality and a culture of non-violence.
Express in artwork, poetry, essay or song what young people today can do to further Dr. Martin Luther King's Dream and achieve new hopes and aspirations.
REQUIREMENTS: + Art work - Paper size not larger than 12" x 18"
+ Essay, poem or song - Not longer than 2 pages
DEADLINE: Entries must be received by 5 pm on Friday, February 18, 2011

Cash prizes and gifts will be awarded on Sunday, February 27, 2011 at 4:00 pm at the New Haven Peoples Center, 37 Howe Street during the 37th Annual African American History Month Celebration sponsored by the People's World. All entries will be recognized.

This competition is sponsored annually by the People's World in Connecticut to remember the lives and work of Dalzenia Henry and Virginia Henry who devoted themselves to the young people of New Haven and to making a better future.
