FANRPAN Excellence in Journalism Award (South Africa)

Deadline: 1 June 2011

The Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources Policy Analysis Network (FANRPAN) is pleased to announce the launch of its inaugural FANRPAN Excellence in Journalism Award.

This award is designed to recognise individual achievement and encourage greater coverage of African agriculture and related issues such as food security, climate change, rural livelihoods development, market access, natural resource management (e.g. soil fertility, water use, biodiversity), and urban food supply.

Award Criteria

Journalists should submit a portfolio of three (3) stories, which either (a) represent a series of reports on the same issue over a sustained period or (b) explore the relationships between agriculture and related policies, research and/or investments.

Submitted stories must have been published at some point in the year prior to the issuance of the award, and these stories can come from a variety of media (e.g. print, online or broadcast).

Judging Criteria

FANRPAN will determine a short list of award finalists. Thereafter, a judging panel of five (5) experts will review short-listed entries to determine a winner. The final judging panel will consist of an editor, a journalist, a policymaker, a farmer and a senior member of FANRPAN.

Prize

The short-listed group of journalists will be invited to attend the 2011 FANRPAN Regional Policy Dialogue. During the week-long event, they will be given further journalistic training in a tailored workshop, be given access to a number of high-level agricultural experts, and be expected to file stories on a daily basis from the dialogue.

The award winner will be announced at a ceremony taking place at the dialogue itself.

Submission Deadline

1 June 2011, 5pm

How to Enter

Candidates should submit their portfolios on or before the submission deadline either by email or by post. Please make sure to reference the “FANRPAN Excellence in Journalism Award” in your correspondence.
