The Hispanic Black Gay Coalition and Rising Voices Press Announce: A CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS for a new coming out project from HBGC. Edited by: Uriah Bell and Earnest Offley

Target Group: OUT LGBTQ Men and Women of Color of ALL ages.

HBGC and Rising Voices Press are seeking to compile a book of coming out stories from 35-50 OUT LGBTQ men and women of color. What was your state of mind? Who did you come out to first? What (if applicable) was your parents’ response? How did religion or spirituality play into your decision to come out? What was your biggest worry? Did your behaviors / lifestyle choices change? What advice would you give to anyone currently battling with the decision to come out of the closet?

Purpose: The purpose of this project is to provide a written outlet for LGBTQ men and women to share their coming out stories. This medium will prove both therapeutic for those that are sharing their stories as well as those who are battling with how and when to ‘come out’. All proceeds from this project will be benefit HBGC’s mission to work to inspire and empower Hispanic, Latino and Black LGBT individuals to improve their livelihood in everyday life through activism, education, community outreach, and counseling. Because of the delicate and personal subject matter, works can be submitted under a pen name or alias for privacy and security. While works may be published under a pen name, legal name will be required for contact and copyright purposes.

Contributors will not be compensated if their work is selected, but will retain all rights to their works / stories.

All pieces should be factual. HBGC and Rising Voices Press are not looking for creative works of fiction.

Short stories (2500 -7000 words), poems, and essays (2000-5000 words) will be accepted. All selected pieces will be edited for grammar, content, punctuation, and overall message.

Deadline for submissions is January 31, 2011

Submissions should be submitted in MLA format as attachments in MS Word or Rich Text Format via email to submissions.risingvoices@gmail.com.
