Job Opening: Food Editor for Good Housekeeping Magazine (Associated Magazines, South Africa)

Associated Magazines seeks an experienced, creative, energetic Food Editor to lead the magazine's Food Department under the Editor's direction. We're looking for a fast, enterprising editor who can come up with creative and fun ideas, quickly capture our unique voice, champion reader's interests and consistently meet tight deadlines.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Provide leadership to assigned projects from concept through to published work including conceiving and proposing compelling and competitive food ideas; creating and managing deadline schedules; collaborating on recipe development, testing, and editing; researching, writing, and editing text; planning and supervising photography; delivering clean manuscript in a timely manner; and supporting marketing and promotions departments.

• Study cooking and book publishing trends; stay informed and ahead of the trends as they relate to publishing opportunities. Develop and maintain professional relationships with industry-related contacts nationwide.

• Create comprehensive and compelling proposals, and present proposals to Editor in a creative and professional manner. Develop project criteria, outlines, and specs.

• Collaborate frequently with editorial, design, test kitchen, photo, production, promotions and other related team members for efficient and effective workflow for all.

• Work with Promotions Department to conceive, test and produce brand-targeted advertorials and to build and maintain brand relationships. Stay informed on brand identities and design requirements.

• Recommend, recruit, supervise, and edit freelance writers and other freelance personnel as needed.

• Participate in taste tasting and/or recipe testing as needed. Liaise with test kitchen;

• Oral and written communication with consumers and industry as needed.

• Assist with additional department related assignments as needed.

• Assist with the planning of sections and major features and the development of the editorial calendar. Meet regularly with the Editor to plan the food coverage in all issues, as well as in digital media and for special-interest projects.

• Conceive of, assign and edit innovative food and entertaining features: Pitch thoughtful ideas; evaluate pitches from freelance developers; commission stories and recipes within budget; Research and write creative copy as needed, including coverlines, headlines, deks. Line-edit and rewrite quickly with skill and ease, turning bland or boring copy into smart, funny content.

• Edit text and recipes according to magazine style.

• Communicate with art department and food stylists regarding food photography shoots; serve as editorial representative at food photo shoots; review film and approve selected photos.

• Assist with conceptualizing special sections, bonus issues, and Web-print initiatives. Oversee and produce special sections/units when required.

• Represent the publication at conferences, press luncheons, and other public events.
Requirements
• Vast capacity for initiative and creativity in order to plan unique food stories and continually revitalize recurring columns.

• Ability to write and edit with a strong voice that evokes the Good Housekeeping brand and reflects the magazine's playful approach.

• Strong analytical, organizational, interpersonal and problem-solving skills.

• Ability to prioritize and multitask within a deadline-driven environment, while simultaneously paying close attention to details.

• Strong sense of self-reliance and confidence in order to work independently as well as to step in and lead a team.

• Flexibility and adaptability to constant change in workload and scheduling.

• Positive attitude and enthusiasm.

• A minimum of three years consumer magazine experience, with at least two years focusing on food content.

• A solid food background from a culinary school, restaurant or test kitchen.

• A firm knowledge of recipe writing style and current food trends.

• Experience managing junior-level staff.

• Valid Drivers License and own transport.
