    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    MANAGING ALL PHASES OF PRODUCTION, WHICH INCLUDES:

    • Setting production and commissioning deadlines according to factory print dates.

    • Employing freelancers when required according to rate guidelines provided by HR and the Finance department.
    MAKING AN EDITORIAL CONTRIBUTION, WHICH INCLUDES:
    • Helping the Senior Editor with editing/re-writing features, when time allows.
    • Writing sidebars, intros and captions to help the Copy Editing Department if and when needed to help keep production on track.
    • Sourcing ideas for anything from features to special projects to snippets, and contributing these (at features meetings).
    • Representing the magazine at promotional and networking events when required.
    Requirements
    • Minimum 2 years experience as Managing Editor within the consumer magazine industry.
    • A related tertiary qualification.
    • Above average general knowledge – able to edit a wide range of subjects (from fashion and beauty to health, finance and food).
    • Able to work outside or regular hours, on occasion, to meet required deadlines.
    • Management qualification and/or experience on an international publication will be given preference.

    The Position

    CIMMYT seeks a talented, dedicated Science Writer/Editor to help reach external audiences with pertinent technical and general information about its research maize, wheat, socioeconomics, and conservation agriculture, with special focus on sub-Saharan Africa. The Science Writer/Editor will be based at CIMMYT’s office in Nairobi, Kenya.

    Responsibilities

    The Science Writer/Editor will edit technical scientific publications, grant proposals, and other technical information; and write and edit non-technical material intended to increase public awareness of CIMMYT’s activities, as required.

    The specific responsibilities include:

    * Help develop diverse communications products, including the corporate annual report, project brochures, funding proposals, policy briefs, technical bulletins, scientific books and chapters, journal- and magazine articles, and varied content for web pages.
    * Edit scientific articles, technical reports, and other documents for accuracy, clarity, style, and usage.

    The main responsibility is to sub-edit all copy for publication, ensuring that it is in House and Leisure style and tone and that it is factually and grammatically correct. The job also entails working with the chief copy editor to ensure that deadlines are met, and with the promotions department to write text for advertorials.

    REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

    The copy editor reports to:

    • the editor (or, in her absence, the deputy editor); and
    • the chief copy editor (this being the primary reporting relationship).

    The copy editor also works closely with: the art department, the promotions department and the editorial department. The copy editor stands in for the chief copy editor when she/he is absent in which case the chief copy editor's job responsibilities become hers/his.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES

    1) To subedit all editorial and promotional copy, which includes:
    • correcting factual and language errors;
    • checking style and tone;
    • checking all contact details are correct;

    5) Writing copy for the HL website each month.

    6) To work with the chief copy editor in preparing documents for repro and working through final corrections with the art department.

    7) Writing text for advertorials, The monthly mailer and other promotional material where needed.

    SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

    The copy editor needs to:
    • be a good team worker who can handle deadlines and work effectively under pressure;
    • think clearly and creatively;
    • have at least one year's experience as a copy editor;
