New Media Publishing is seeking to appoint a managing editor for their two premier food brands: Eat In and Eat Out. The portfolio currently comprises two websites (www.eat-in.co.za and www.eatout.co.za), two award-winning annual directories, electronic newsletters, a collection of supplements and digital magazines as well as South Africa's premier restaurant and food awards.
The position is based in Cape Town, with the appointee reporting to the content director. Applicants should have a minimum of three years' experience in magazines (preferably on a food title).
As managing editor you will be responsible for:
* Working closely with content director, editor, online editor, art director and events manager
* Managing workflow on a daily basis
* Drawing up and managing timelines
* Drawing up and managing editorial budgets
* Editorial research and writing
* Commissioning of freelance writers
* Managing subbing and fact-checking
* Affecting changes
* Organizing shoots where applicable
* Assisting the art director with picture research when the need arises
* Assisting the events manager with administrative duties when the need arises
* Administrative tasks as and when needed.
The following skills and experience are required:
* A degree or diploma in journalism or a similar field
* An excellent working knowledge of online, print and social media
* A high level of computer literacy, including internet, e-mail, Microsoft Office and InDesign
* Fluency in English
* Good communication and organisational skills and the willingness to be a team player
* The ability to multi-task and work under pressure
* Resourcefulness; and
* A passion for food and magazines.
