CITY PRESS - Rewriter
MAIN PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
To check articles across the City Press offerings (newspaper and web), correct errors in grammar, spelling, usage style and facts, and rewrite the article to ensure accurate and error-free content in line with the publication's specific style and quality guidelines.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Check articles for, and correct, incorrect spelling, punctuation and grammar
* Ensure that formatting, spelling and grammar used in articles, captions and headings are consistent throughout the publication
* Correct errors in usage and style, ensuring that content conforms to the publication's rules and writing standards and guidelines for consistency in how words, phrases, typographical elements, etc. are used
* Check the sources for all statistics, dates, external data and other facts quoted or attributed in the article, cross check suspicious facts and other information lacking credibility; Identify possible instances of libel
* Ensure that any content submitted for publication fits the length and format specifications for each section, identifying areas where content can be removed or revised to improve clarity, consistency and accuracy
* Rewrite applicable sections of the publication that do not meet style guidelines, or where readability, flow of text etc can be improved
* Write headlines and captions
SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES
* Fluency in the languages relevant to the publication
* Excellent attention to detail
* Excellent writing skills in the required languages
* Ability to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines
* Planning and organising skills
* Able to work independently, as part of a team and with individuals from different departments
* Tenacity
QUALIFICATION
* Relevant degree/diploma in languages, arts or journalism
EXPERIENCE
* Proven competence and fluency in the use of relevant languages
* At least five years experience as a journalist
* At least 5 years experience in an editing environment (newspapers, magazines etc)
PRIOR KNOWLEDGE
* Sound knowledge of editorial principles
* Knowledge of and interest in current affairs
* Excellent general knowledge
* Proficient in relevant computer packages and software applications
