Job Title: Senior Editor for Men’s Health
Job Description/ Purpose of the Position:
This post is based in Cape Town, with the successful applicant reporting to the Editor.
Key Performance Areas:
1. To edit and project manage all the Men’s Health editorial brand extensions and themed sections, including special projects and guides throughout the year.
2. Maintain and improve the South African content of the magazine by conceptualising and executing local ideas and broadening the list of contributors.
3. To assist the editor by writing, commissioning and top-editing assigned in-book features and sections on a monthly basis.
4. Meet monthly copy deadlines.
Job Responsibilities:
1. Contribute to the planning of all themed content, including special section, booklets, guides, posters and any form of brand extension that requires originated copy.
2. Oversee the production of all special sections by writing, editing and commissioning the copy and liaising with the art department on creative execution of each project.
3. Work closely with the Editor to ensure well edited and researched copy. The Senior Editor will be responsible for the originality, innovation and thoroughness of everything written and researched to make sure the final product offers benefit and added value to readers and advertisers.
4. Write in-book departments and features as and when required. The incumbent must be prepared to adopt the Men’s Health voice and be able to investigate, interview and research on a wide range of topics across the core editorial pillars.
5. Work closely with the Editor, Deputy Editor and Features Editor to generate new story ideas and content to continually develop the core editorial pillars and broaden the scope of the magazine.
6. Oversee and top-edit the Malegrams front-of-book section, managing the Features Writer to compile and co-ordinate the section.
7. When necessary, assist the editorial team by proof-reading copy during the monthly production cycle.
8. Contribute regularly on the Men’s Health website and associated digital feeds by updating, writing and uploading content to MH.co.za whether for published articles or social media.
9. Liaise directly with Men’s Health US research editors at Rodale Int’l for the latest health and lifestyle information.
10. Ensure strict adherence to the editorial deadlines as laid down in the production schedule.
11. Ensure all contributors sign the required freelance contract and outline the policies of rights and reuse before engaging services or confirming commissions.
12. Perform any other reasonable editorial duties, as instructed.
13. Act as an ambassador for Men’s Health and represent the brand positively at all times.
Required Competencies and/or Experience·
* A minimum of 5 years experience in magazine journalism, with specific experience in commissioning and editing features.
* Tertiary qualification in Journalism or Media Studies, or a post-graduate diploma in journalism.
* A strong interest in writing and editing with a passion for magazine publishing.
* A working knowledge of magazine production, with both writing and sub-editing experience.
* A proficient writer with solid editing skills and experience that can be adapted to anything from features to headlines and intros.
* Proficient personal computer skills in Apple Mac and the Internet.
* Excellent communication skills and a strong command of the English language (written & verbal)
* Own transport
* Must provide examples of published work and contactable references are required.

* A team player with a sound knowledge of the local magazine market, particularly men’s lifestyle magazines.
