Managing Editor: Mango Juice and Time Out
New Media is looking to appoint an experienced, dynamic, organised Managing Editor to fill the above-mentioned vacancy at our Cape Town offices. This position reports to the respective Editors.
The ideal candidate’s skills and qualities should include:
- Previous management and journalism experience.
- Exceptional budget- and people-management skills.
- Ability to work well within a team of creative personalities.
- Excellent organisational, time-management and trafficking skills.
- Experience in production, visual composition and pagination.
- Competency in InDesign.
- The ability to work accurately and professionally under pressure.
- Good writing, language and proof-reading skills, as well as bilingualism (English and Afrikaans).
- Experience in digital, video and other media platforms will be an advantage.
Responsibilities will include:
- Controlling the monthly and annual magazine budget.
- Co-ordinating the production process between the production, repro, editorial, art and advertising departments, in order to meet delivery deadlines. This includes sign-off of Epsons and printer proofs.
- Setting and co-ordinating internal timelines.
- Managing copy flow with the sub-editors and layout flow with the art director and designer.
- Managing freelance contributors.
- Helping to arrange photo shoots, as well as sourcing images and copy.
- Administrative tasks, including collating invoices and costing sheets.
- Organising and participating in planning meetings and brainstorms.
- Helping compile dummy books.
- Some writing of articles.
The successful candidate will work closely with the editor and must be willing to work overtime when required.
