  • Job Opening: Network/ News Editor for Internews (Sudan)

    Background:

    Internews® Network is an international media development organization based in Arcata, CA and Washington, DC whose mission is to empower local media worldwide to give people the news and information they need, the ability to connect, and the means to make their voices heard.

    General Function:

    To manage the news and current affairs content exchange between the Internews radio stations in Southern Sudan and Transitional areas. This includes hands on sourcing, editing, scripting, production and arranging for broadcast of local and national current affairs programmes, news bulletins and features in accordance with the station style guide and within all legal parameters. Position will be based in Juba but regular travel upcountry will be required. Position will be an active part of the network management team and will work closely with our senior training manager.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    * Produce news and informational/current affairs content around topics of interest for the network;
    * Supervise and task news editors and journalists based in the upcountry stations with information gathering, processing and editing when needed;
    * Administer, coordinate, supervise and task journalist(s) based in Juba with information gathering, processing, recording and editing;
    * Oversee and implement all distribution of audio and written material needed for transmission through the network radio stations;
    * Plan and implement policies for production and transmission of news and current affairs programmes on the network;
    * Conduct daily news production meetings and allocate news assignments in Juba;
    * Ensure technical standard of high quality for programming content;
    * Ensure the credibility of the radio stations and editorial integrity of news and current affairs content;
    * Plan and implement a daily, weekly and monthly agenda for coverage of relevant topics for the network and individual stations within the network;
    * Give guidance for formats of news coverage and presentation of news and current affairs programmes;
    * Contribute to network style guide and training curriculum;
    * Contribute to content to be published on website;
    * Contribute to content to be used in reports and in donor relationships;
    * Conduct training in basic journalism, reporting for radio and digital editing when needed and upon request of the senior training manager;
    * Conduct and oversee translations from Simple Arabic into English and English into Simple Arabic;
    * Oversee and organize any other translations needed;
    * Attend meetings and coordinate with partners to develop news and current affairs content;
    * Plan and coordinate daily/weekly/monthly editorial staff work timetable;
    * Establish and maintain relationships with key community stakeholders and governmental authorities;
    * Complete all required documentation on a daily, weekly and monthly basis, including news program logs, weekly check-ins with training manager, and monthly reports;
    * Attend to any other duties assigned by the program management

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    * 3 years experience working within a journalistic field;
    * Experience having managed and worked within a team environment with management responsibilities;
    * Excellent written and oral English communication skills
    * Digital editing experience, and the ability to be creative with news headlines and content;
    * Excellent interpersonal skills that are required to work effectively with other journalists and radio staff;
    * Knowledge of radio procedures/or on-air experience;
    * Self motivated, able to prioritize work load, and direct work of team members to ensure all goals and objectives are achieved;
    * Excellent computer skills;
    * Knowledge of local Arabic and South Sudanese languages is preferred
    * Understanding and knowledge of deep political and historical context of Sudan
    * Ability to travel within Southern Sudan and the Three Areas. Willingness to spend extended time in the field, with limited facilities, often under harsh conditions.

  • Job Opening: Community Radio Resident Journalism Advisor for Internews Sudan

    Background:

    General Function:

    Internews Network is currently seeking an experienced broadcast professional for the position of Resident Journalism Advisor to be based in Southern Sudan. The position is a roving, field –based position and requires living in the communities where the stations are operating. It involves providing on-going training and mentoring, and building the managerial and journalistic capacity of community radio station staff in remote parts of the region.

    The position requires experience in training in small low-tech radio stations preferably in the developing world. The successful candidate will need to be resilient, resourceful and self motivated to work in the extremely challenging environment of Southern Sudan and will preferably have lived in African conflict/post conflict environments. The work requires extensive travel to remote parts of Southern Sudan. Competitive salary and benefits package.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    * In conjunction with the Senior Training Manager, assist in the development and implementation of a broadcast training program for up to 6 community radio stations
    * Organize workshops and train community radio reporters and managers with limited experience on a variety of topics, with special emphasis on content, production and radio station management
    * Assist in development and implementation of community radio station policies, structures, and general operating procedures to ensure smooth and professional running of the stations. Train station management staff in these procedures and ensure adherence to same.
    * Travel to community radio station locations in remote regions of southern Sudan and the Three Areas on a regular basis to provide necessary guidance and oversee daily operations and programming schedules of the radio stations
    * Assist in development of station identity/branding
    * Assist in all Monitoring & Evaluation aspects of the project, including daily program logs and training reports
    * Coordinate with Internews partner organizations and other NGOs to facilitate creative program sharing and collaboration
    * Work extensively in the community to increase community participation in creative radio programming
    * Provide media literacy training with NGOs, government partners and civil society

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    * Minimum 3 years radio broadcasting experience, preferably in community radio.
    * Experience in broadcast training and mentoring.
    * Fluency in use of digital field recording equipment, basic studio equipment and CoolEdit Pro/Adobe Audition.
    * Experience living and working in Africa and/or conflict/post-conflict environments preferred
    * Ability to adjust to shifting political circumstances and create programming accordingly
    * Sensitivity to cross-cultural dynamics in the work place and experience supervising staff
    * Must be self-reliant, resourceful, good problem-solver, good humored, and flexible.
    * Ability to travel within Southern Sudan and the Three Areas. Willingness to spend extended time in the field, with limited facilities, often under harsh conditions.
    * Must be computer literate.

  • Arabic Editor (Berlin/Sudan) Needed by MICT Media

    MICT - Media in Cooperation and Transition is seeking an 
Arabic Editor (Radio / Print) to be based in Berlin with extensive travel to North Sudan / Khartoum.

    MICT - Media in Cooperation and Transition is a Berlin based media development organisation that implements projects in the Middle East, Africa, and Afghanistan. Activities focus on the interplay between conflict, media coverage and reconciliation in crisis regions. MICT's services comprise 
the training of journalists and media producers, program and content development, production of radio programs, films and books, as well as media research and monitoring in conflict zones.

    The Sudan Votes project has been implemented by MICT since 2009. The project has trained a group of print and radio journalists from Northern and Southern Sudan through a combination of workshops in Sudan and a continuous coaching process by an MICT editorial team based in Berlin. Together with the editorial team, the Sudanese project journalists have produced a significant number of quality newspaper and radio pieces on election related issues in Sudan (please see www.sudanvotes.com).

    During the new project period, starting in November 2010, MICT intends to continue the project's main pillars: (a) capacity building for Sudanese journalists and (b) production of quality print and radio pieces, particularly on referendum-related issues

    For the new project period, MICT is seeking new editorial team members, to be based between Berlin and Juba (English editors), and between Berlin and Khartoum (Arabic Editors). Specifically, MICT is looking for an Arabic Editor.

    Fulltime position, starting as soon as possible, until end of project period (August 2011).
    To be based in Berlin with regular and extensive field trips to (North) Sudan.

    Requirements:

    * Education in journalism and professional experience as print and/or radio journalist in developing countries, preferably in Sudan or in the region
    * Native Arabic speaker; fluency in English; working knowledge of German is an asset
    * Sound knowledge of history, politics, and media / journalism in Sudan / East Africa
    * Ability to work and live in North Sudan (in particular Khartoum) for about 30-50% of the time during the project period

  • The Ghada Award for Young Writers (writing contest in English or Arabic, Sudan)

    The Ghada Award for Young Writers

    In memory of a lost early young and writer we invite young writers of both creative and expository styles to a competition meant to encourage and foster early signs of genius in writing and to steer our gifted young writers in the right direction for the development of their interests.
    Rules, Terms and Conditions

    The award is offered in honour of the memory of Ghada-Siham Mujtaba Mahasi (14th Nov.1994 – 24th April.2010)

    The Ghada award offers prizes that include electronic gadgets, monetary and symbolic gifts for the best writer and the two runners-up.

    10 works (3 winners + 7 runners-up) will be published in a booklet to be marketed for maintaining continuous awards for young writers and the publication of their works.

    Entry Rules:

    1. Articles can be in English or Arabic Language.

    2. Contestants should be girls and boys of 12 to 18 years old – unrestricted level of Education.

    3. Free choice of topic relevant to personal experiences, current affairs, or social phenomena in Sudanese people lives, or a story or poem.

    4. Articles should be between 750 -1000 words in length.

    5. Articles should be either written in black ball point, clear handwriting or typed, on one face side of A4 paper.

    6. Articles should be written, edited, and handed in by the contestant him/herself.

    7. Participants should include the following along with their work:

    • Written consent of the joint guardian of the copyright in a booklet referred to above, without prejudice to the rights of the author or literary rights in the future publication of his/her text.

    • A sentence of not more than 25 words describing the topic.

    • A copy of Birth certificate.

    • A contact number or e-mail address.

    8. Deadline: We will be receiving articles until 21st of October 2010.

    11. Some of the contestants will be called for an interview to verify authenticity of his/her topic.

    12. Any signs of plagiarism will disqualify the contestant.

    • Ideas, their relevance and coherence

    • Style of presentation

    • Language used: fluency and accuracy

    14. The results of the contest will be announced on 14th November 2010.

  • English Teachers Wanted for Southern Sudan (US$ 4,400 per month)

    PAE is looking for English teachers. Candidates must have good command of the English language and must demonstrate/be qualified English teachers. Candidates will be teaching the Sudan's People Liberation Army (SPLA).

    Candidates will be living and working in extremely austere locations in Southern Sudan . Candidates MUST be in excellent health as there are no hospitals/clinics in some of the locations that they will be teaching in. I unfortunately do not have a job description yet but will send out as soon as ready.

    * Salary = USD 4,400.00 per month, hazard pay = 25% of basic pay, per diem= USD 57.00 per day.
    * Leave rotation - 2 weeks off every three months
    * Contract duration = 1 year
