    NUHA Foundation Essay Competition: The Role of Education in Developing Countries

    Are you interested in the role of education in developing countries? Are you interested in winning £100 or more?

    NUHA is launching its first essay competition which is open to all. Whether you’re from Sri Lanka, Sweden or South Africa, we would like to hear what YOU have to say about how you think education should function in your country and across the world.

    The competition has been established with the twin aims of:

    * Creating an international platform to debate issues relating to education and development
    * Creating an opportunity to publish the work of students and of people who want to be heard

    Who can enter?

    Absolutely anyone! There are two prizes this year:

    * NUHA Blogging Youth Prize (for those born in 1993 or after): £100
    * NUHA Blogging Prize (for those born before 1993): £150

    It doesn’t matter whether English is your first, second, third or fourth language: your article will be judged first and foremost on the quality of your argument and the originality of your ideas.
    What should I write?

    Taking education and development as your starting point, write an essay of between 500 and 1,500 words in response to one of the statements below.

    Youth category:

    1. “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Nelson Mandela
    2. Education is worth paying for.
    3. In the 21st century, it is better to give a child a computer than a book.

    General category:

    1. “Only the educated are free.” Epictetus
    2. The State should encourage access to private education.
    3. “The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.” Alvin Toffler

    When should I enter?

    As soon as you like! The Editor will read every essay she receives, which may then be posted on the NUHA blog and we hope that you will respond to these postings with further debate.

    The deadline for all entries is 16 September 2011 and we may post your article on the NUHA blog until 30 September 2011.

    You then have until 31 October 2011 to vote for your preferred articles by liking or re-posting them on Facebook, tweeting about them or emailing them to your friends. You also have until 31 October 2011 to continue debating about the topics above.

    On 1 November 2011, the Editor will announce which 9 published articles have been shortlisted for the Prizes. For each Prize, 3 articles will be shortlisted on the basis of your vote, 3 other articles will be shortlisted on the basis of how much you have been debating them, and 3 more articles will be shortlisted on the basis of their intrinsic quality.

    On 1 November 2011, the Editor will also unveil the panel of judges for each Prize, who will focus on the quality of the argument and the originality of the ideas of the 9 shortlisted essays.

    The winners for both the Blogging Youth Prize and the general Blogging Prize will be announced on 1 December 2011.

    Voices of Youth needs bloggers!

    Voices of Youth is UNICEF's site for young people interested in learning about and taking action on issues affecting their lives. VOY is currently undergoing a redesign to update the site's look and functionality. The new site will emphasize interactivity and dialogue, and will feature posts from youth contributors, UNICEF staff, activists, bloggers, etc. Our target population is young people worldwide who are interested in learning more about issues central to UNICEF's mandate (such as child rights, gender-based issues, education, HIV and AIDS, etc.)

    We're looking for 2 part-time bloggers to create original content (primarily print, but video, audio, and visual pieces are welcome) for Voices of Youth. Content can include: position pieces on topics relevant to VOY; interviews with thought-leaders; innovative youth-based initiatives to watch; overviews of new trends or breaking news; interesting photos or videos, etc.

    Contracts will start in February for 3 months, with the possibility of extension. Previous blogging experience is not necessary, but you should be an excellent writer and familiar with blogging conventions. People of color and people from countries outside the U.S. are strongly encouraged to apply.

    You should:

    • Be an excellent writer, with solid research skills and the ability to tell a good story;
    • Have interest or experience in one or more of the areas currently highlighted on VOY;
    • Be able to commit to roughly 2 to 3 days per week;
    • Have excellent time-management and organizational skills;
    • Have a solid internet connection and a gmail account;
    • Be able to put your own unique spin on other articles/blog posts.

    Experience blogging with similar themes is highly desirable, as is past experience as an activist, demonstrated use of social media, and knowledge about key themes in development. We'll work with you along the way, and are flexible regarding working hours and check-ins. UNICEF retains the right to full editorial privileges.

    NEW MEDIA, PUBLIC OPINION & DEMOCRACY IN THE ARAB & MUSLIM WORLD

    Satellite TV and the internet have transformed the media landscape in the Arab and Muslim world. Although their development is a recent phenomenon, new media have not only opened up new opportunities for journalism but also empowered audiences and civil society organizations with unprecedented platforms for 'free' expression and social activism. The recent social revolution in Tunisia and the current ongoing protests in Egypt are said to be fuelled by social media networks and satellite TV.

    The Wikileaks phenomenon is said to have empowered the public with a wealth of secret information previously hardly if not impossible to obtain about governments in the Arab world. New technologies are also said to have reinvigorated a sense of an 'Arab transnational public sphere' and a 'pan-Arab market'; brought together the concerns of Arab audiences and united a region geographically vast.

    The aim of this special issue of the Journal of Arab and Muslim Media Research is to develop and publish a timely collection of papers representing current research in this area. Of particular interest are papers that present empirical findings of fieldwork. Papers welcomed in this special issue include, but are not necessarily confined to the following topics:

    - Blogging and bloggers as citizen journalists; are bloggers making a social difference?
    - Social media and the people's revolution in Tunisia
    - Satellite TV and the internet as cites of resistance/alternative media or sets of 'censored national enclosures'
    -E-campaigning and political/social groups in Egypt and other Arab countries
    - Wikileaks, political corruption and the right to know
    - How are activists/the youth interacting with platforms like 'Youtube', 'Myspace', 'Flicker', 'Faithtube', 'Facebook' and 'Blogging' to pursue their objectives?
    - The internet, development and civil society in the Arab and Muslim world
    - Women bloggers and the mediation of women issues
    - Youth subcultures and new media
    - In the absence of real democracy in some parts of the Arab and Muslim world is new media creating a new form of social/political capital: e-democracy?
    - What functions are the internet and satellite TV playing in mobilizing public opinion?

    Manuscripts to be considered for publication should be submitted via e-mail. Each manuscript should be no more than 8500 words in main text and 150 words in abstract. All submissions will be blind-refereed. Please refer to the Submission Guidelines for the Journal of Arab and Muslim Media Research before you formally send your paper.   • 2011 The African Network Annual Awards for Excellence in HIV /AIDS Communication in Africa

    Background

    The African Network for Strategic Communication in Health and Development (AfriComNet) annual Awards aim to : 1) recognize outstanding contributions made by individuals/organizations to strategic HIV/AIDS communication, 2) encourage innovation and quality in strategic communication, 3) enhance appreciation of strategic communication as a necessary tool for effective health and development programs and 4) acknowledge programmes, tools and productions that advance strategic communication and can be adapted and applied elsewhere.

    Eligibility

    * Individuals and organizations implementing HIV and AIDS initiatives, campaigns, productions and tools that advance the field of strategic communication and can be evaluated, adapted and applied elsewhere
    * The nominated initiative must have been implemented in Africa.
    * At least one person involved in the initiatives development should be an African citizen or have worked in Africa for a period of more than two years.

    Nomination guidelines

    To nominate, the following procedure must be followed:

    * Any person or organization can nominate an initiative by submitting a completed nomination form
    * Nomination forms are available from the AfriComNet website or can be requested by email.
    * The nominator must describe his or her association with the nominated initiative or production.
    * A summary of what the initiative has accomplished, sample materials and any impact documented, should accompany the nomination. (e.g. Websites/URLs, Annual reports, midterm and other evaluation reports etc)
    * Two referees (individual or organization) including their contact information shall be submitted for the nominated initiative. The references shall have worked or associated with the creative individual/team for at least two years.
    * An initiative can be nominated in only one category.

    Selection criteria

    Entries will be judged based on their contribution to innovating, strengthening and popularizing strategic communication as a necessary tool for health and development. The jury will score nominations on the following criteria;

    * Relevance to context
    * Follows a strategic communication process
    * Innovation
    * Can the intervention easily be replicated?
    * Sustainability of the intervention
    * Impact of the intervention/ Evaluation results

    Categories

    Winners will be awarded in the following categories;

    1. Best Mass media intervention, campaign or production.

    This category recognizes initiatives using mass media as the main channel (50% plus of the initiative) for their strategic communications (includes film, television or radio productions advocating behavior change or raising awareness about HIV)

    2. Best Multi-channel communication intervention or campaign.

    Recognizing integrated strategic communication initiatives or interventions (using television/radio, print, interpersonal channels). Nominations should show that there is a balance in the use of the various channels.

    3. Best Interpersonal/community initiative/intervention

    Includes use of community radio, peer education, counseling, or community mobilization

    4. Best Social marketing initiative, strategy or campaign

    Entries in this category include product/service advertisement, branding or promotion

    5. Best Popular/folk media initiative

    This category includes the use of creative and performing arts advocating behavior change or raising awareness about HIV (e.g. theater, puppetry, visual arts and dance, drama or music concerts, etc).

    6. Best HIV or AIDS related series

    Entries for this category include newspaper/magazine column or series of articles, documentary films and TV/ radio broadcasts, or comic book series

    7. Best social/new media initiative

    This category includes the use of new/social media e.g. Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, text messaging, blogging etc, to advocate for behavior change or raise awareness about HIV. Entries must show that social/new media is the main implementation platform for the initiative.

    Rules of Entry

    * The competition will be judged by an assigned judging team
    * The judges' decision is final and no negotiation or correspondence will be entered into;
    * One winner will be selected in each of the seven categories.
    * Two finalists in each category will be contacted in advance to let them know that their initiative is being considered for an Award.
    * Should the entries in a particular category fall below the minimum standard the judges reserve the right not to select a finalist
    * The judges reserve the right to transfer entries for consideration in other categories at their discretion
    * No responsibility is taken for entries lost, delayed, misdirected, and incomplete or any other cause outside AfriComNets control.
    * AfriComNet reserves the right to disseminate, reproduce or publish any entry, without payment, for the purpose of sharing a particular innovative communication tool.
    * AfriComNet reserves the right to disqualify any entry if it has reasonable grounds to believe that the nominee/nominator has breached any of the terms and conditions.

    The Prize

    The two finalists in each Award category will receive a fully paid trip to the award venue, an opportunity to present their initiatives, recognition during a gala award ceremony, and media exposure. The winner will receive a plaque and the runner up a certificate recognizing the achievement. AfriComNet does not offer prize money for this award.

  • Six-Week WORDwarrior Writing Workshop (South Africa)

    Date: 15 March 2011

    A 6-week writing workshop to get you writing, exploring and expressing and seeing your world with new eyes. 90 minutes every Tuesday from 6pm to 7.30pm for 6 weeks at 6 SPin Street, Cape Town, starting March 15.

    Classes are very small creating a safe space to express your true self. The course material is geared to help you see your world - and your life - as an extraordinary place - to see it more creatively, with fresh eyes - and then to transfer this new information into the written word.

    It will include playing with, amongst others:

    * poetry, free prose, blogging

    * writing for self and writing for a reader,

    * observation skills (all writers should know how to engage with people/environment so as to be able to write about different characters),

    * using the senses to engage with the page,

    * getting into character

    * accessing the magical child

    * memoir/self writing.

    Workshop will include exercises in the class that will, amongst others, unlock hidden aspects within ourselves and allow us to access that creatively by writing. It will also include "seeing and writing" outside the class environment in which you will engage with your environment and people with 'new' eyes.

Gender Across Borders (GAB) is always looking for writers to comment on gender, sexuality, race, and class issues at local, national, and/or international levels.     Background:

    Internews® Network is an international media development organization based in Arcata, CA and Washington, DC whose mission is to empower local media worldwide to give people the news and information they need, the ability to connect, and the means to make their voices heard.

    General Function:

    Internews Network is seeking a Resident Journalism Advisor candidate for a USAID funded Media Sector Development Program in Mozambique. The goal of the program is to support the professionalization and empowerment of independent media in Mozambique, with a twin focus on journalists and media outlets in Maputo, as well as community radio stations across the country. The expected outcomes are: Increased Professional Capacity of the Mozambican Media Sector, Improved Journalism Education at the School of Communications and Arts at EMU, Assistance to Community Radio Stations and Support for Legal Enabling Environment for Media. The Resident Journalism Advisor provides training, professional advice and guidance in print, radio and “new media” journalism, radio production and newsroom management.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    * Oversee the training department: Coordination of in-house mentors, their reporting schedules, activities, and curriculums, plus the organization of training workshops and seminars conducted by consultant trainers.
    * Conduct regular basic journalism training workshops and carry out regular follow-up mentoring of trainee journalists
    * Coordinate with local media outlets to facilitate on-site trainings and trainings conducted at the Internews office.
    * Supervise activities of the media monitoring and evaluation staff as well as their reporting schedules.
    * Assists with review of local media outlets for production and equipment grant awards.
    * Prepares and assembles materials for monthly and quarterly reports, in compliance with donor guidelines.
    * Reports to and strategizes with Country Director on new directions to help independent media in region, specifically through the use of “new media” and “social networking” approaches.
    * Maintain relationships with colleagues, partner stations, and donors through reporting

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    * Demonstrable Radio/print journalism experience
    * Experience of / interest in the creation, application and development of “new media” and web-based approaches to newsgathering and dissemination: website, mobile phone, SMS, blogging, twitter, crowd-sourcing/crowd feeding, citizen journalism etc
    * Journalism training experience in a developing world context including training in political/policy coverage, human trafficking issues, human rights coverage, gender issues, economic reporting, environmental reporting and coverage of development issues
    * Media management / newsroom management experience
    * Experience living and working in region/developing world
    * Familiarity with multi-faceted development programs, including planning, budget management and project reporting
    * Experience in a supervisory position (desirable)

    FREELANCE BLOGGERS - ADVOCATES FOR YOUTH

    Advocates for Youth is hiring a number of freelance bloggers to write on various reproductive justice- and human rights-related topics, including but not limited to:

    - Comprehensive sex education and abstinence-only-until marriage programs

    - Abortion rights in the U.S. and across the world

    - Stereotypes and portrayals of sex, sexuality, and gender in pop culture (film, television, music, etc.)

    - LGBT rights in the U.S. and across the world

    - Contraceptive access and HIV/AIDS services in communities of need

    Your writing will be featured on Amplify (http://www.amplifyyourvoice.org), an online community and blogging platform visited by over one million people in 2010. Amplify is a youth-driven community dedicated to changing society's dysfunctional approach to sex, sexuality, and sexual health. Accordingly, we are looking for bloggers that know how to write with verve, passion, and conviction in order to inspire their readers to social action.

    In addition, we are looking for bloggers who can:

    - Demonstrate a clear commitment to reproductive justice and sexual health advocacy

    - Meet tight editing and publication deadlines
    - Write with a strong editorial voice (think opinion-driven and investigation-driven pieces as opposed to academic prose)

    - Write thoughtfully on a specific area of expertise, or else on a broad variety of topics

    - Be willing to write on topics that are assigned to them, and respond quickly to current events

    Finally, freelance bloggers should know -- or at least be willing to learn -- the ins and outs of grassroots online marketing and cross-posting: in this position you will be responsible for promoting your writing on popular websites, blogs, online newspapers and magazines, and other venues.

    This is a remote position. Freelance bloggers will be paid per article/blog post.

  • Call for Papers for an Edited Book: New Media in the Midst of the Tunisian Revolution

    Deadline: 4 February 2011

    Satellite TV and the internet have transformed the media landscape in the Arab and Muslim world. Although their development is a recent phenomenon, new media have not only opened up new opportunities for journalism but also empowered audiences and civil society organizations with unprecedented platforms for ‘free’ expression and social activism. The WikiLeaks phenomenon is said to have empowered the public with a wealth of secret information previously hardly if not impossible to obtain about governments in the Arab world.

    In light of the dramatic development of events, which have led to a social revolution in Tunisia, it has become evident that new media have been playing a key role in keeping the momentum going, and bringing the voices of the disengaged Tunisian youth to the attention of world media, and hence to international public opinion. Mobile phones, Blogs, YouTube, Facebook pages and Twitter feeds have been instrumental in mediating the live coverage of protests, public speeches, as well as police brutality in dispersing demonstrations. The internet in this case has assumed the role of a very effective uncensored news agency from which world media have been able to freely source newsfeeds, raw from the scene. Such developments have proven very significant in changing the rules of the game, of journalism production, and dissemination of information in a
    country where the government historically keeps tight control on the media and where almost no platform has been available for opinions critical of the political elite.

    The edited book project aims to address the above themes. We seek contributors who wish to specifically address the revolution in Tunisia and the role new media have been key tools in fuelling the regime change. Contributions may consider the following themes:

    - Blogging and bloggers as citizen journalists; what difference have they been making?
    - Satellite TV and the internet as cites of resistance/alternative media or sets of ‘censored national enclosures’
    - Arab TV and the mobilization of public opinion in Tunisia
    - E-campaigning and political/social groups
    - WikiLeaks, political corruption and the right to know
    - How are activists/the youth interacting with platforms like ‘YouTube’, ‘Facebook’ to fuel the protests that have led to the collapse of Ben Ali’s regime?
    - Media censorship in Tunisia
    - Women bloggers/activists and the mediation of women issues
    - Youth subcultures and new media
    - Support/responses of the Arab street to the Tunisia revolution

    Submissions:

    Please send an abstract of about 350 words for your proposed paper by 4th February 2011. The abstract should provide and outline of the main themes/questions, research method and sample of the study. Please make sure that your abstract includes the following: Title, name of the author, affiliation, complete contact details and a short author’s bio. Final papers should be about 8500 words. All submissions will be refereed.
